Winter sports at Duxbury High School are about to begin. Tryouts for all teams start on Mon., Dec. 1. The 2014-2015 winter sport season includes boys’ and girls’ basketball, ice hockey, winter track and field, swimming and diving, alpine skiing, winter cheerleading, and boys’ wrestling.
Alpine Skiing is coached by Mr. Kevin Nolan. The boys’ and girls’ teams have combined practices at Blue Hill Mountain in Milton, but they race separately. Senior captain Tayler K. said, “The season is looking very strong and we have a lot of new underclassmen which is going to help make up for the loss of last years’ key seniors.” They hope to have just as good of a season as they did last year. Senior captain Vincent C. is hoping the boys have an even better season.
Boys’ Basketball is coached by Mr. Gordon Cushing and the captains are Chris A. and Grant G. Last year the boys’ team missed out on making the playoffs by one game. This year they are hoping for a different outcome. Grant said, “We lost five seniors but we have a lot of upperclassmen that are going to step up, most of our starters will be sophomores and juniors so we have a lot of depth on the team.”
Girls’ Basketball is coached by Mr. Bob Sullivan and the captains are seniors Catherine H., Jackie S., Maddie F., and Molly Q.. Last year the girls made it through five playoff rounds but ended up losing to Arlington Catholic in the state semi-final at the Boston Garden. The captains are all very eager for the season to start to they can earn redemption when it comes to the playoffs. Catherine said, “We are all really excited because we have the same five starters as last year so we all want to work hard in order to make it farther than we did last year.” The girls are looking forward to a successful season.
Winter Cheerleading is hoping for another successful season. Last year they made it to states for the first time and also had their first ever male cheerleader from DHS. They are coached by Mrs. Jen Carley and have three senior captains, Maggie A., Maryellen S., and Sarah A. Maryellen said, “This season is looking even better because we have improved tumbling skills as well as stunts. If everyone gives as much as they did last time, Nationals in Disney is a reachable goal.”
Girls’ Ice Hockey is hoping for a fifth consecutive state championship his year. They are coached by Officer Friend Weiler and the captains are seniors Marissa F. and Jane D. Coming four state championship wins only makes the season harder for the girls. Jane said, “The season is looking very strong and we have a lot of new underclassmen which is going to help make up for the loss of key seniors.” The girls’ hockey team is looking to set another record for DHS in the upcoming season.
Boys’ Ice Hockey is coached by Mr. John Blake and the captains are seniors Tucker K., Jack G., and Shawn E. The boys’ last year won the league and made it into the Super 8, which was a huge accomplishment. Shawn said, “We did lose 11 seniors but we have great freshmen, sophomores, and juniors that will be a great fill in those spots, we are excited to try and win the league again.”
Boys’ Swimming and Diving is looking forward to another successful season with the help of coach Mr. Doug Backlund and its captains- senior Coleman B., junior Kevin C., and junior Mike O. Last year the boys’ won the league and sent four male swimmers to States. They had great success last season and are looking forward to this winter. “I think we will do very well again, we are hoping to at least win the league and send some guys to states.” said Kevin.
Girls’ Swimming and Diving is coached by Ms. Elizabeth Walsh and the captains are Mackenzie B., Lucy Q., and Avery P. All three of the girls swim different events and a couple girls from each team swim in each event. Lucy said “We lost a lot of good seniors but if everyone still continues to put forth effort I think we can be very strong.”
Girls’ Winter Track and Field is coached by Mr. Ron Glennon and the captains are seniors Catherine C. and Nicole G. Winter track and field practices in the Steele Building and competes at the Reggie Lewis Center in Roxbury, Ma. Nicole said “We did better last year than we have in previous years so we are excited to keep that going. We have a bunch of new members this year which is awesome.”
Boys’ Winter Track and Field is coached by Mr. Greg Seery and the captains are seniors Max B., Jake O., and CJ R. They also train in the Steele Building with the girls team. Coach Glennon works with all of the sprinters, throwers, and jumpers, and Coach Seery works with the long distance runners. Max said “I think this season is going to be really good, we are a strong team with a wide variety of strengths, we have great jumpers, throwers, and runners. It is the most diverse team we have had in a long time.”
Boys’ Wrestling is coached by Mr. Kyle McCarthy and the captains are seniors Matt B. and Kyle A.. Last year the boys were second in the league and sent 4 wrestlers to states. Matt said, “We only lost one senior and have a lot of good incoming freshmen.” The boys are looking forward to a very strong season.
