The French Election
What do you know about the election going on in France? On April 23, 2017, the first round of the French presidential election was held. The two top candidates, Emmanuel Macron and Marine Le Pen are headed to a run off election on May 7. How much do people actually know about these candidates? Rep. Josh Culter said, “I know that the National Front candidate Marine Le Pen and the more centrist candidate Emmanuel Macron were the two top vote getters. Both are somewhat non traditional candidates and they certainly offer a stark contrast to each other.”
Emmanuel Macron is thirty-nine years old. He currently does not associate himself with any political party, but is against the far right. His campaign focuses on “optimism for the future.” Marine Le Pen is the leader of France’s far-right National Front. She is also the daughter of Jean-Marie Le Pen, a former leader of the National Front Party. Her campaign focuses on restoring France. The results of this election will effect the US in one way or another. “If Macron wins I think it will restore some stability to Europe and the EU and reassure financial markets in the US. If Le Pen wins I think it will be a real wild card,” says Cutler.
As for the world in general, Cutler says, “The fact that a far right wing candidate has advanced to the finals in France is an indicator that there is still lot of political unrest and our political leaders need to do a better job of addressing the economic concerns voters are feeling.” Either way, the results of the election will have an effect on countries worldwide.
