Uncommon Grounds

Uncommon Grounds is a Coffee shop that also sells baked goods on St. George Street, located behind Farfars. Mark Currier has been the owner of the shop since 1995, and since then has enjoyed getting to know Duxbury.

The story behind this place all started when Mark was working for Cumberland farms. “I tried to get good coffee into the store. I looked everywhere for some good coffee but I couldn’t find any. That’s when I had the idea to make my own coffee shop and do it myself,” Mark says. After he had the Idea, he needed to find a location for his coffee shop.

After some searching, he liked what he saw in Duxbury. Mark said, “I looked everywhere on South Shore, I liked Duxbury because it was a nice town, the shop had lots of parking, and had reasonable rent, plus it was on the way to beach, and the school.”

If you have paid a visit to Uncommon Grounds before, you may have noticed that it has almost no online presence. Without an E-mail, or an easy way to contact them, how did they become so successful?

Mark says, “It takes a lot of time, but it’s a small town, so eventually everyone gets to know you.”

When asked what he enjoys most about the business, Mark replied that he likes that he controls everything that happens to the store, he’s the boss. He also said that he loves his customers, and of course, he enjoys roasting coffee.

“In life, you’ve got to do something you like. Money is just not enough incentive.” Said Mark.

Blueberry and Chocolate Chip muffins are easily the most popular bakery item at Uncommon Grounds. But watch out, most of Mark’s stuff is gone after the morning hours. “After the customers leave, I spend every afternoon roasting,” Mark says. Mark gets most of his ingredients from farmers markets all over South Shore.

Mark said that he has had good luck with employees over the years. His family also helps out around the shop, including his nephew, son, and wife. Uncommon Grounds opens at 6AM and closes at 2PM everyday excluding Sundays.
