Top 5 Family Christmas Movies
The holiday season is associated with being a time for families to be together. In honor of that, here are the top 5 family Christmas movies.
- “The Polar Express”
“The Polar Express” tells the tale of a young boy (Daryl Sabara) who is questioning Santa’s existence. On Christmas Eve, he witnesses a train called the Polar Express, that is about to leave for the North Pole. The conductor (Tom Hanks) allows the boy to board. The rest of the film follows the train’s journey to the North Pole. This film is darker than most Christmas family movies, and Tom Hanks plays five different characters.
- “Arthur Christmas”
“Arthur Christmas” starts off with Malcolm Claus (Jim Broadbent), considering retirement from his Santa Clausicle duties. His oldest son, Steve (Hugh Laurie), is the heir to the Claus fortune after Malcolm’s retirement. However, during Malcolm’s 70th Christmas flight, an unnoticed present is lost. Grandsanta (Bill Nighy) takes Malcolm’s youngest, clumsy son, Arthur (James McAvoy), to deliver the missing present to its ordained child in need. The movie was critically acclaimed for its animation and story.
- “Home Alone”
“Home Alone” is the story of a young boy named Kevin McCallister (Macaulay Culkin). He is left behind by his family as they leave in haste to catch an early morning flight, to Paris, for Christmas. Unfortunately, Kevin meets some opposition in the form of thieves Harry (Joe Pesci, who does not swear for once in a film) and Marv (Daniel Stern), who attempt to break into his house. Kevin lays traps to confuse and stop the pair. Meanwhile, Kevin’s parents realize that they left him behind, and try to get back to him. The film spawned four sequels.
- “National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation”
Clark Griswold (Chevy Chase) is determined to have a good, old-fashioned family Christmas. He invites everyone in his family over for the holiday. Everything goes wrong as the Griswold’s prepare for Christmas. Clark is also waiting for a bonus from work in order to build a pool in his backyard. Bad luck and tomfoolery abound. The film is considered to be a Christmas classic.
“Elf” is about Buddy (Will Ferrell), a human who is raised by elves in the North Pole. Buddy believes himself to be an elf and dresses like one. Papa Elf (Bob Newhart) tells Buddy that he is a human, and his biological father (James Caan) is on the naughty list for being greedy. Buddy goes to New York to change his father. Along the way, Buddy falls in love with Jovie (Zooey Deschanel) and decides to spread Christmas cheer “by singing loud, for all to hear.”
