MLB Postseason Predictions
By Jack N.
One word to describe the 2018 MLB Regular season is historic. This season featured one of the greatest teams in baseball history, a home run hitting team that set the record for most dingers in a single season, one of the strangest yet most impressive pitching performances of all time, and a new immersive crop of raw, young talent. The best part about all of these achievements is that they are all heading into the 2018 postseason.
NL Wild Card: Colorado Rockies @ Chicago Cubs – Tuesday, 8:00 pm Eastern Time
After two historic tiebreakers, the National League Wild Card is set. Then, after two devastating tie breaking losses, both of these ball clubs will be out for blood.
Both these teams are pretty even when it comes to skill, but there is one outlying advantage for Chicago: homefield.
Colorado has spent the last 48 hours jumping from plane to plane. First from Colorado to L.A. and now L.A. to Chicago all just in the span of a day. The Cubs on the other hand, haven’t moved from their home in Wrigley Field in a over a week. In this time frame, the Cubs are an even 4-4 as the Rockies come to town for a win or die battle.
Prediction: Cubs 4 Rockies 3
AL Wild Card: Oakland A’s @ New York Yankees – Wednesday, 8:00 pm Eastern Time
The Yankees hit an insane 267 homeruns as a team this year, yet the player with the most homeruns, Khris Davis, 48, is on the opposing Oakland Athletics.
During the season series, these two powerhouses split the six games evenly. Both Oakland and New York had the best home run hitting teams this season as a heavy scoring game is anticipated.
The consensus pick for this matchup is that the Yankees offense will overpower Oakland’s pitching as the New York bullpen will come up big to hold the A’s players to little scoring in this anticipated American League Wild Card elimination game.
Prediction: Yankees 7 A’s 4
NL Divisional Series: Atlanta Braves @ Los Angeles Dodgers – Starts Thursday 10/4
The rookie skill of Atlanta takes on the pitching of Clayton Kershaw and the Dodgers in this National League Divisional series. The Dodgers, reeling after a tie breaking win, are looking to reach the World Series for the second straight year after losing last year.
The Dodgers are going to have a tough challenge against this young star-studded Braves team. During the season the Dodgers beat Atlanta four out of six times and the youth of this Braves team might end up being its unexperienced downfall.
Prediction: Dodgers Win Series 3-1
NL Divisional Series: Chicago Cubs @ Milwaukee Brewers – Starts Thursday 10/4
After a tie break just days before, these two teams will meet again in this tight NL Central division battle. After Monday’s Brewers win, they are the clear leaders to take this series. During the tie break, the Brewers showed exactly why they will win this series. The Brewers ability to string up a lot of back to back hits and the ability of their bullpen makes them the frontrunner in this series if not the whole National League.
Prediction: Brewers Win Series 3-1
AL Divisional Series: New York Yankees @ Boston Red Sox – Starts Friday 10/5
Red Sox vs. Yankees is known as one of the greatest rivalry in U.S. sports. Since the 2004 Red Sox Championship the rivalry has laid dormant, until April 11th of this season. With both teams once again being successful at the same time again, tempers would inevitably flare.
After a brawl between Red Sox pitcher Joe Kelly and former New York Yankee Tyler Austin, the war between Boston and New York was reignited. The meeting in the playoffs between these two teams for the first time since 2004 means that this series is bound to be fight.
Two of the best offensive powerhouses in the league, Boston and New York, are set to take their conflict back to its biggest stage. This series will come down to not who plays better but who makes the most mistakes. Both teams are plagued with their weak parts, whether it is the Red Sox untrustworthy bullpen, or the Yankees shaky defensive play.
A junior from Scituate High School, Danny T. said, “That Yankees defense won’t be able to handle the Boston bats which will give the bullpen enough room to take New York head on.”
The possibility of the Yankees winning the Wild Card game means they could have the momentum going up against the well-rested Boston team.
Experience will be a key point in this series, as the Yankees and Red Sox both have an extremely young team, though the Red Sox do have a few veterans sprinkled in. This will be the highlight of this playoffs and it’s undoubtedly a can’t-miss series.
Prediction: Yankees Win Series 3-2
AL Divisional Series: Cleveland Indians @ Houston Astros – Starts Friday 10/5
Though overshadowed by the prospect of a Boston vs. New York series, the Indians and the Astros may be the most important of the playoffs. Houston, the defending World Champions, look to repeat their postseason success, but first must make it through the steady and persistent Cleveland Indians.
The Indians, lead by two-time World Series winning coach Terry Francona, look to get past the first round since last year they were eliminated by the Yankees in the first round last year.
Their opponents, the Houston Astros, are the most well-rounded team in the league and pose a great threat. The winner of this series will play the winner of Boston/New York series. With Houston being more well-rounded in pitching and fielding, they have the slight advantage.
Prediction: Astros Win Series 3-2
NL Championship Series: Los Angeles Dodgers @ Milwaukee Brewers – Starts Friday 10/12
Both tiebreak victors make their way to Miller Park for this NL Pennant matchup. The season series for these two gives no advantage as they split the six games evenly. These teams also haven’t played one another since early August. This is very important because the Dodgers haven’t seen the full strength of the red hot “Brew Crew.” 2014 MVP Kershaw goes up against current NL MVP Christian Yelich in this heavyweight battle.
Prediction: Brewers Win Series 4-2
AL Championship Series: New York Yankees @ Houston Astros – Starts Saturday, 10/13
The stage is set for the Yankees to get their long-awaited revenge. Last year, the Astros pulled off a 4-3 series win in the American League Championship over the same New York Yankees. In this possible rematch of last years AL Championship, not much has changed between these two teams. Both are at the top of their game and both are heavy contenders for the title. The Yankees lead the season series by a large margin, yet the Astros will have the confidence, having defeated New York last year. This confidence and shaky New York defense bodes well for Houston.
Prediction: Astros Win Series 4-3
2018 World Series: Milwaukee Brewers @ Houston Astros – Starts Tuesday, 10/23
The last time an MLB team repeated a World Series win was when the New York Yankees won three in a row from 1998-2000. The Astros are looking to become just the ninth team since 1907 to win the World Series two years straight. Houston won’t have it easy though, as they will have to face the explosive Milwaukee Brewers.
The Astros, after a long and close series against New York, must be able to switch gears to be able to keep up with Milwaukee. Milwaukee, like a lot of teams before them–New York, Atlanta, and Boston–are a rather young squad.
This youth, just like Atlanta, will actually go against them as experience is a huge factor when it comes to the World Series. The strength of experience and full team effort will likely put Houston ahead in this series.
Prediction: Astros Win World Series 4-2
