A YouTube Controversy: The Mind of Jake Paul

By Arden Y.

If you’re someone who loves watching YouTube, you’re probably familiar with the name Shane Dawson. For those who aren’t, Shane is one of the most popular YouTubers, having started in 2008 and currently holding 18 million subscribers.

I love how Shane makes videos about controversial people and changes your opinion on them” Junior Alia Y. said.

Recently on his channel, Shane has been making documentaries on controversial YouTubers. His most recent documentary featured Jake Paul, another popular YouTuber.

The last episode in the 8 part series, released on October 18th, was 1 hour and 45 minutes long. The point of the series was to find out why Jake did controversial things on his channel, such as lighting a swimming pool on fire, jumping on and off of buildings and cars, and “abusing” people on camera. Shane said his goal was to find out if Jake was a sociopath. A sociopath is defined as someone who cannot feel empathy, which usually results in manipulative behavior.

So who is Jake Paul? Jake is, as said by Shane Dawson, “one of the fasted growing Youtubers of all time.”

After watching the episodes, junior Rose O. said, “I feel that Shane did such a good job doing the series and it opened up about what Jake Paul’s like and how his life really is.”

Jake is not to be confused with his brother Logan, who is also a controversial YouTuber, along with their parents, who are bloggers on Youtube.

To complete the series, Shane did extensive research on Jake’s history, with Jake’s permission. He visited Jake’s house and spent the day with him, finding out what he was like off camera.

After all this, Shane sat down with Jake and asked him to share the real reasons why he did what he did. The final interview touched on personal topics, but Jake wanted to share, and seamed pretty honest about the whole thing.

“He was a very rude, and self centered person in the eyes of many” Freshman Ali M said “but now I think he has learned from this, and is better.”

The first episode in the series, The Mind of Jake Paul, was published on September 25th.

Shane didn’t outright say the conclusion on his channel. He left it up to the viewers to decide their opinion on Jake Paul, after hearing the other side to the story.

About the series as a whole, Ali said that “the first episode was definitely underwhelming in ways, it was really just [Shane] getting ready to go, and really nothing else that important, honestly, I think that the episode could have been part of another episode, or even cut out completely.”

“Overall, I think that Shane definitely did the best he could, but I think that some things could have been improved upon.”

In regards to the students’ feelings on Jake Paul, the subject of these documentaries, the opinions were similar.

“Before, I felt he was a jerk who cared about nobody else but himself” Ali continued,“Now I realize that he was just raised in a bad home, and it is not his fault he acts this way, and most of it is fake too.”

Rose didn’t watch Jake Paul before, even though a lot of people talked about him and the hate he was receiving. But after watching the series, she said that “after watching what his parents do and how Logan affected his life, I now know a lot more about him because of Shane.”

Finally, Alia said that she knew about Logan, but nothing about Jake. “I thought [Jake] was a bad person from the first few episodes in the series,” she said. “By the end though, I really liked him, not because of his videos, but just because he seemed like a nice person.”
