On February 1st, 2nd, and 3rd, the DHS Drama Club, along with the music department, will put on this year’s musical Beauty and the Beast. The musical will be directed by Jeff MacFarlane, music teacher Mr. Judge, and junior Julia C.
“Working with Mr. Judge and Jeff has been very fun,” said student-director Julia. “It has been an honor working alongside them because they have had several years of working on the musicals over the past years and I have learned a lot from both of them.” Mr. Judge said, “I love being able to work with so many students from the cast, pit, and crew. It’s fun to be part of a collaboration on such a large production.”
The musical is based on the Disney movie released in 1991, which had a live-action remake in 2017. It follows Belle (played by junior Shannon M.) as she has to deal with advances from Gaston (freshman Ben L.). Belle’s father Maurice (junior Preston K.) gets lost in the woods and stumbles upon the Beast’s (played by sophomore Jack B. with one scene played by freshman Nate L. in costume while Jack will provide the voice) castle Belle goes looking for her father and winds up living in the castle. On being part of the musical as a freshman, Nate said, “It’s definitely a new experience and I personally think it’s a great production to be involved in.”
The Drama Club helped build the set for the show, which includes a castle with two stories and a room that resembles a library.
“I really can’t stop raving about the set to everyone, it looks amazing,” said Julia C. “Also, everyone has been so helpful with the process and trying to help with everything that they can, and I’m very thankful to everyone that has helped. So the process of the set, props and everything included in the production of the show is all coming together and I’m so excited for everyone to see it.”
Tickets for the musical will be $10 for students, little kids, and senior citizens, and $15 for adults. As Julia C. said, “Come see Beauty and The Beast.” The shows are February 1st at 7:00, February 2nd at 7:00 and February 3rd at 1:00.
