The Pecking Order: Which fast-food chicken clucks best?
When it comes to fast food, Massachusetts residents have many options: McDonalds, Burger King, Wendy’s, etc. But when the question of chicken arises, the debate narrows to three popular establishments: KFC, Popeyes, and Chick-fil-A.
Right now, Popeyes and Chick-fil-A are in the midst of a “chicken feud”. Both restaurants sell a variety of chicken fast food, focusing on chicken sandwiches and chicken tenders. As much as these two popular fast food chains are similar, there are several differences in the taste, price, and service of the chicken.
I decided to compare and contrast the chicken strips, which are basically chicken tenders. I went to Popeyes at South Shore Plaza in Braintree, and Chick-fil-A in Plymouth.
At Popeyes, I ordered the three chicken tenders dinner with no sauce. The price was very low, at just $3.99. The tenders came on a plate with a biscuit and fries on the side. The chicken tasted very dry, and the inside of the chicken looked very undercooked. Not my favorite.
The service at Popeyes was rather slow, as I was standing around for about 5 minutes waiting for my food.
At Chick-fil-A, my usual order is the 4-count chicken strip meal with no sauce, so that’s what I got. However, the price was much higher at $6.09, totaling to $9.99 after getting fries and a soda. The strips came in a small cardboard box with a small bag of fries on a tray. The chicken was much more moist than Popeyes, even without the sauce. Also, it did not taste undercooked like Popeyes chicken did.
On the other hand, the service at Chick-fil-A wasn’t much better than that of Popeyes. The food came out fast, within 2 minutes, but there are a large number of workers and customers, making for wrong orders, which in my experience, happens a lot, especially at the drive-thru.
In conclusion, I have to say that Chick-fil-A is the better restaurant. Despite the spotty service and high prices, the chicken was very good and tasted much healthier.
